What's Next for Netflix Prices? Execs Talk Strategy

Netflix execs have been busy discussing something that’s on everyone’s minds—price hikes! Co-CEO Greg Peters shared some insights during their latest earnings call. He said their pricing strategy has stayed steady over the years. They aim to provide more value to members every quarter. Only then do they think about raising prices to keep investing in the service. Since 2015, Netflix has raised prices in the U.S. and Canada six times, with the latest hike happening just this year. Other streaming services, like Apple TV+, have also increased their prices. In fact, Apple TV+ started at $5.99 a month but now costs $9.99. This price increase, known as "stream-flation," comes at a time when the cost of groceries and other goods has gone up too.

During the call, Greg Peters didn’t give a specific timeline for when U.S. prices might go up. He joked that an analyst, Rich Greenfield, should join their pricing committee. Another exec, CFO Spence Neumann, also had a laugh, saying he was stepping down from the committee to make room for Greenfield. An analyst asked about the big price difference between the $6.99 ad-supported Basic tier and the $15.49 Standard plan. Peters said the Basic tier offers great value, and they plan to keep offering a range of plans. Each plan must prove its worth to customers without causing confusion. Greg Peters also mentioned that Netflix has recently raised prices in some other countries. They often test price changes in a few places before rolling them out more widely. In their report to shareholders this quarter, they mentioned price hikes in parts of Europe and Japan. Starting tomorrow, prices will go up in Spain and Italy as well.
