What's the Deal with ISIS and Terror Attacks?

You might have heard about the tragedy that happened in New Orleans, where a man drove his truck into a New Year's crowd, killing 15 people. The FBI found a black flag in his truck that belongs to a group called the Islamic State, also known as ISIS. This group has been around for a while and has inspired attacks in many places. ISIS started as a split from another group called al-Qaida. Under their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, they took over a lot of land in Iraq and Syria. They were known for being really harsh and killing people who didn't follow their strict rules. In 2019, they lost all their territory and their leader blew himself up.

Even though ISIS has lost a lot of power, their ideas still inspire others to do bad things. There are groups all over the world that follow ISIS's ideals and carry out attacks. In the United States, there have been some big attacks inspired by ISIS, like the one in San Bernardino in 2014 where a husband and wife killed 14 people, and the one in Orlando in 2016 where 49 people were killed at a nightclub. Many people see ISIS as a perversion of Islam. Most Muslims don't agree with the violent actions of ISIS. The black flag with white writing that ISIS uses is actually a central part of the Islamic faith, but ISIS has given it a bad name. It's important to think about why people are drawn to ISIS's ideas. Is it because of something missing in their own lives? Or is it just because they want to cause trouble? Either way, it's a complicated issue that can't be solved overnight.
