When Trust is Betrayed: The Gymnastics Photographer Scandal

Imagine going to a gymnastics event, thinking it's all about fun and skill. Little did the parents and kids know, the photographer there had a dark secret. David Eric Yellen, a once-trusted figure in Michigan's gymnastics community, was recently sentenced to seven years in prison. The 59-year-old's crimes? Distributing child pornography and secretly snapping over 56, 000 photos of children's feet at events he worked. Yellen's world came crashing down when the FBI found his photos on the internet. During a search of his home in June 2023, they discovered a massive collection of photos, some zooming in on children's private parts through their leotards. The photos were meticulously organized, with folders named after the gymnasts, some as young as three.

Prosecutors believe Yellen's actions were calculated, using his position to gain trust and access. They found two million child pornography files on his devices. Yellen was arrested and charged with distribution and possession of child pornography. After his sentencing, U. S. Attorney Dawn Ison emphasized, "Yellen's actions were illegal and a severe breach of trust. " This scandal raises tough questions. How do we protect our kids in places we think are safe?
