Where Are Crimes Happening? Analyzing News to Predict the Future

Every day, numerous crimes take place around us. However, only a select few are recorded, leading to an overall increase in crime rates. This could be due to a lack of concern or meticulous record-keeping of past crimes. It's crucial for everyone to consider crime statistics from the past when deciding where to go and for law enforcement to take steps to control crime. While national organizations like the National Institute of Justice provide crime data, they don't break it down to the local levels like Union or Thana.

To address this, we've developed a method to give people a sense of safety in specific locations by ranking crime rates in different areas and visualizing crime hotspots on a map. Additionally, our approach includes a mechanism to predict future crime occurrences. We gather crime data from various online Bangla newspapers, employ text processing techniques like stemming and keyword extraction, use algorithms to pinpoint locations, apply cosine similarity, and leverage naive Bayes classifiers. Lastly, we’ve designed a custom model to forecast future crimes.
