Who knew Groundhogs were weather experts?

Did you know that Groundhog Day is way older than Punxsutawney Phil? It goes back to the times of the Celts and their agricultural celebrations. They marked the midpoints between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. This is known as Imbolc. It is also the time when Christians celebrate Candlemas. The date of Groundhog Day is also significant in the Celtic calendar and in the Christian holiday of Candlemas. Groundhogs have been used to predict the weather for a long time. The Celts and Germans used badgers or bears to predict the weather. But, in Pennsylvania, where there are many people of German descent, groundhogs became the animal of choice. They have been observing the groundhog’s emergence from hibernation for centuries. This tradition has spread to at least 28 U. S. states and Canadian provinces. The people of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, have been celebrating Groundhog Day since the late 1880s. They started by picnicking, hunting, and eating groundhogs. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, established in 1899, takes care of Phil and his family. They have a special space for them next to the Punxsutawney Memorial Library. There is even a window to watch Phil in his burrow.

Phil’s predictions have not always been accurate. He was late coming out in 1941, and he emerged before sunrise in 1929. Most of the time, Phil predicts more winter, not an early spring. Also, Phil is not the only groundhog making weather predictions. There are other groundhog events, like the one in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. Octoraro Orphie, or his remains, are used to make the winter forecast. Understanding the groundhog is important to understand the celebration. Groundhogs are part of the squirrel family and are related to chipmunks and prairie dogs. They are also known as woodchucks or whistle pigs. Groundhogs are plant-eaters and can live up to three years in the wild. Some people eat them, especially when they are young and have been eating clover. The meat is said to taste better then. Groundhog clubs and lodges have been around since the 1930s. They are social clubs that help preserve Pennsylvania German culture. They were traditionally all-male groups and some still are. These clubs sometimes fine members who speak anything but Pennsylvania Dutch at meetings. Groundhogs are mostly solitary creatures who start to emerge in midwinter to find a mate. The idea that they can accurately predict the weather is not backed by science. The National Centers for Environmental Information has compared Phil’s record with U. S. national temperatures and found that he is not always accurate.
