Who runs Anchorage? The city's leaders don't match its diverse population
Anchorage, Mountain View, USAFriday, June 12, 2026
Running for office isn’t just about money—it’s about who gets invited into the conversation. Many people of color lack the established connections to unions, political circles, or business leaders that often back candidates. Without those networks, promising leaders struggle to even get their names on the ballot. Cities like Portland recognize this gap and pay their council members what the job demands. Anchorage still hasn’t matched that standard.
Young residents deserve to see their own faces in leadership. When classrooms are full of different languages and backgrounds, but the Assembly stays the same, it sends a message that some voices don’t count. If Anchorage truly wants to represent everyone, it needs to actively seek out and support diverse candidates. The future of the city depends on leaders who understand the needs of all its people.
