Why Americans Are Cutting Down on Meat
USATuesday, November 12, 2024
Some groups are more affected by the high cost of meat than others. People earning between $25, 000 to $49, 999 a year, women, Black people, and high school graduates are particularly sensitive to the price. Beef, for instance, was 4. 2% more expensive in September this year compared to last year, and it's expected to go even higher. Poultry prices also jumped by 6. 3%.
Older people and women are more likely to consider environmental sustainability and health when buying meat. Most people reported eating red meat between one to four times a week, with similar patterns for processed meats and poultry. Only 5% of people follow a vegetarian, vegan, or plant-based diet, and 14% eat meat five or more times a week.
The study shows that making sustainability a priority for consumers is a challenge. Experts suggest that a mix of approaches, like emphasizing health, taste, and affordability, might be needed to really change eating habits. The study was published in the journal Appetite.
