Why China and Saudi Arabia are Becoming Travel Buddies
Riyadh, Saudi ArabiaMonday, November 11, 2024
China and Saudi Arabia have signed deals to boost their air links. This includes airlines like China Southern, China Eastern, and Air China. For example, China Southern started a flight from Beijing Daxing to Riyadh in April. They added another from Shenzhen in June. These flights are strategic, helping Saudi Arabia's goal to diversify beyond oil. They want to boost tourism, trade, and tech. Some airlines, like Cathay Pacific, start with a few flights and then add more if there's demand.
Saudi Arabia wants to be a hotspot for Chinese tourists and businesses. It's planning big projects like the Red Sea Project and NEOM. Chinese companies are investing in these. In 2023, they signed a deal to swap currencies, making trade easier. Saudi Arabia wants to have 300 million air passengers by 2030. It started Riyadh Air, a new airline backed by its Public Investment Fund. This could make travel between China and Saudi Arabia even smoother.
