Why Did Republicans Boot Mike Turner?
Dayton, USASaturday, January 18, 2025
In Congress, Turner was a reliable Republican vote, but he did occasionally cast votes that looked more Democratic, like supporting minimum wage increases. He was also involved in non-partisan causes and tended to the interests of his district, particularly Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
As the years went by, Turner's district became more Republican due to redistricting. He seemed to shift to the right, becoming more combatively anti-Obama and voting against controversial initiatives. During the Trump years, he didn't stand out as a maverick. He voted against Trump's impeachments and supported him in various controversies.
But Turner's downfall came when he was seen as too bipartisan, especially in his support for Ukraine and the certification of the 2020 election. He was removed from his chairmanship because he didn't fit the current Republican mold. It's a stark reminder that in politics, balance and bipartisanship can sometimes be seen as old-school and outdated.
