Why Men in KwaZulu-Natal Avoid Sexual Health Clinics
KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South AfricaWednesday, January 8, 2025
The study talked to 72 men over 15 years old. Some went to hospitals, and others lived in hostels around Durban. Researchers used focus group discussions and looked at the data in a thematic way. They found seven main issues that stopped men from using SRH services: they didn't know about the services, they were reluctant to use them, their culture and religion influenced them, they didn't have enough money, their relationships were a factor, they thought their own sexual behaviors were low risk, and healthcare workers weren't always helpful.
On the other hand, three things encouraged men to use these services: good healthcare resources, more male healthcare workers, and a positive attitude from healthcare staff. The study shows that men's lack of awareness and other barriers need urgent attention from the government.
