Why Republicans See a Long Senate Reign Ahead

Republicans are feeling confident about keeping their Senate majority for years to come. Senate GOP campaign chief Steve Daines believes their victory in the 2024 election, with 53 seats under their belt, could mean long-term control. Democrats had a tough map in 2024, but things might not get much easier in 2026 or 2028. In 2026, Democrats could potentially pick up seats in Maine and North Carolina, but the road gets tougher with states like Alaska, Iowa, Kentucky, and Texas firmly on the Republican side. By 2028, Democrats will have to defend key seats in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. The key challenge for Democrats is expanding their appeal among non-college-educated white voters, who have significant influence in the Senate due to the two-seats-per-state rule.

However, there's a silver lining for Democrats: their coalition of college-educated and Black voters is well-suited for off-year elections. Meanwhile, down-ballot Republicans have struggled to replicate Trump's coalition without him leading the ticket. Trump's transition team has also turned to the much-criticized Project 2025 to help fill jobs in the upcoming administration. During the campaign, Trump's team shunned Project 2025, but now they're using its personnel database. Several appointees, like Tom Homan and Brendan Carr, were already contributors to Project 2025.
