Why Roeg Sutherland is Optimistic About Indie Films Post-Strikes

Roeg Sutherland, the co-head of CAA Media Finance, recently shared his thoughts on the state of the independent film sector after last year’s strikes. Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival, Sutherland emphasized that the key issue right now is finding the right projects and intellectual property (IP), not money. He notes that traditional studio output has declined, making the job of sourcing new ideas even more exciting. Stories from regions like Korea and Scandinavia, for instance, are gaining traction, and local audiences worldwide are showing renewed interest in their own films. The market, however, is tougher now because there are fewer scripts and projects to work with. This means that professionals like Sutherland need to generate many projects themselves. Yet, he sees this as an opportunity. The film industry is becoming less America-centric, allowing local businesses to flourish and re-engage their audiences. Sutherland believes this shift opens up new doors and makes this an excellent time for the industry.

Despite the challenges, Sutherland remains optimistic. He emphasizes that the job of creating films and TV shows is not going away. People will always need storytellers and creators to immerse them in new worlds. Sutherland has been a regular at the Zurich Film Festival for 17 years. He jokes that the festival giving him the Game Changer Award is their way of telling him not to return. Yet, he plans to defy this "message" and attend next year. The festival has evolved significantly over the years. It has grown with the Summit, making Zurich a hub for financial institutions and global business relationships within the film industry. What started as a small event has become a major industry gathering where professionals from around the world connect and network.
