Why the Supreme Court Won't Delay Trump's Sentence
New York City, USAFriday, January 10, 2025
Trump's lawyers had asked for a delay while they appealed his guilty verdicts from last May. They argued that, as president-elect, he's immune from criminal prosecution and that the evidence used against him was unfair. The Supreme Court had expanded presidential immunity last July, remembering that former presidents get "presumptive immunity" for their official acts.
New York's highest court also refused to delay the sentencing earlier on Thursday. The state's prosecutors said there's no reason for the Supreme Court to step in. Trump was found guilty of making false records related to a $130, 000 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election.
