Why the Supreme Court Won't Delay Trump's Sentence

The U. S. Supreme Court has said no to delaying former President Donald Trump's sentencing in his New York hush money case. This happened on Thursday, just a day before his scheduled sentencing. The court's majority thought that Trump's sentencing wouldn't really bother his presidential duties, since he's expecting no actual punishment. They also mentioned that any evidence issues can be sorted out later on appeal. Two of the court's conservatives, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, sided with the liberal justices in this 5-4 decision. Four other conservatives, Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh, wanted to delay the sentencing.

Trump's lawyers had asked for a delay while they appealed his guilty verdicts from last May. They argued that, as president-elect, he's immune from criminal prosecution and that the evidence used against him was unfair. The Supreme Court had expanded presidential immunity last July, remembering that former presidents get "presumptive immunity" for their official acts. New York's highest court also refused to delay the sentencing earlier on Thursday. The state's prosecutors said there's no reason for the Supreme Court to step in. Trump was found guilty of making false records related to a $130, 000 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election.
