Will Korean Troops in Ukraine Cause a Clash? Experts Say No
Korean Peninsula, South KoreaMonday, October 28, 2024
South Korea’s President, Yoon Seok Yeol, has a few thoughts on this. He hinted at possibly sending arms to Ukraine, depending on Moscow and Pyongyang’s cozy level of cooperation. But this falls outside Seoul’s usual policy of not arming countries in conflicts. That's a big shift!
Despite all the speculation, well-known strategists are optimistic about a full-blown clash between the Koreas. Nah Liang Tuang, a research fellow from Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, doubts the Yoon administration would green-light combat troops in Ukraine. Non-combatant observers, though, maybe another story.
But things could get tricky. If both Koreas deploy troops, they might bump into each other. Nah pointed out that if North Korean troops penetrate Ukrainian defenses and run into South Korean personnel embedded with Ukrainian units, self-defense moves would likely be the outcome. These scenarios would have limited political impact, as Russia and North Korea deny North Korean troops are even involved.
Ultimately, experts suggest that South Korea might be attempting to dissuade North Korea from further troop deployment. Naoko Aoki from the RAND think tank noted how complex the situation could become if personnel from both Koreas encounter each other. But it all depends on how North Korea uses its troops.
