Will Nebraska's Electoral Votes Be the Deciding Factor in the 2024 Election?

The 2024 United States presidential election is in full swing, and the race is heating up. With Election Day rapidly approaching, many analysts believe that the outcome could very well depend on the electoral votes of Nebraska. Currently, Nebraska is the only state that splits its electoral votes by congressional district, with one electoral vote allocated to the winner of the statewide popular vote and the remaining four electoral votes allocated to the winner of each congressional district. This unique system has led some to speculate that the electoral votes of Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, which includes the Omaha area, could be the deciding factor in the election. In recent years, this district has flipped from being reliably Republican to being a decided swing district.

To make matters more interesting, the 2nd Congressional District is currently represented by Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Hochul. If the district votes Democrat, it could very well seal the deal for the Democratic candidate. On Sunday, Senator Lindsey Graham, a top ally of former President Donald Trump, called on Nebraska lawmakers to change the state's electoral vote system to a winner-take-all system. Graham argues that this change could give Trump an edge in the race. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has also weighed in on the issue, stating that he would be willing to call a special legislative session to change the state's electoral vote system if there is enough public support. The Nebraska Democratic Party has already begun to show support for the state's current electoral vote system, with yard signs popping up across the state featuring a blue dot on a white background.
