Winnsboro Tornado: A Closer Look

On Sunday morning, a strong gust of wind, clocked at 95mph, swept through the quiet town of Winnsboro. The National Weather Service classified this windstorm as an EF-1 tornado, while two smaller ones, categorized as EF-0, also made their way through the area. The tornadoes left a trail of damage, including downed power lines and broken trees, but luckily, most of the destruction was far from residential areas. Joey Price, the Emergency Management Division Director, shared some good news. "There's been no major damage to buildings or injuries, " he said. Maggie McManus and her family received a tornado warning just in time. They were preparing for church when their phones alerted them. "It could have been worse, " Maggie said, grateful that the tornado mostly hit open fields.

By Monday morning, town officials reported that six residents and two local industries were without power. But crews worked swiftly to restore it. Price praised the teamwork among local agencies. "Everyone worked together to keep residents safe and get power back on, " he said. The tornadoes also left their mark on Fairfield Central High School, snapping a fence and taking down two railroad crossing arms. Nearby, four empty trailers were overturned at a plant. Price pointed out how a slight change in the tornado's path could have caused more damage.
