Winter Chill: What to Expect in North Texas This Week

Get ready, North Texas! A cold snap is on its way, bringing freezing temperatures and maybe even some wintry mix. The National Weather Service says an Arctic air mass is heading our way overnight on Monday. This means we'll be feeling the cold for most of the week. Expect highs in the 30s and 40s with wind chills dropping to single digits. Yikes! The city of Dallas has already opened a shelter at Fair Park’s Grand Place to help those in need. They'll be offering meals and a place to stay warm. ERCOT, the people who manage our electricity, have also issued a weather watch. They’re warning us about higher demand and possibly lower power reserves.

Wind gusts up to 25 mph are possible on Monday, which could cause some power outages. Oncor is working hard to restore power to those affected by Sunday's outages. The extreme cold is expected to stick around for a few days, and there’s a chance of a wintry mix later in the week. This could include snow, rain, sleet, or freezing rain. The weather service is confident that we’ll see some wintry precipitation from Wednesday night through Friday morning. They’re saying there’s a 70-80% chance of at least a little snow. The most likely time for this is Thursday night into Friday morning. ERCOT’s weather watch will last through Friday. They expect normal grid conditions, but they’re preparing just in case. Several shelters will be open across North Texas for people looking to stay warm or experiencing power outages.
