If you're a Wrexham fan, you might be excited about the team playing in Europe. But hold that thought! The English Football Association (FA) has said no to a proposal from the Football Association of Wales (FAW), which wanted to let Welsh teams in English leagues play in the Welsh League Cup. The idea was to give them a chance to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. But the FA wasn't feeling it. They said if you play in the English system, you've got to follow the same rules as everyone else.
Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has been playing in the English league system for a long time. They've climbed up the ranks, from the fifth tier to the third tier, since Reynolds and McElhenney took over in 2021. Right now, they're doing pretty well, sitting in third place in League One after a draw with Birmingham City.
The FAW was hoping this change would bring more benefits to Welsh football overall. They were disappointed when the FA turned down their idea. It would have meant the four Welsh teams in the English system (Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea, and Newport) would have to give up their current right to qualify for European competitions through the English system. They'd only be able to try through the English Cups or if they made it to the Premier League.
It's a tricky situation, because Wrexham has been part of the English league system since 1921. But the FA wants to keep things consistent. So, for now, dreams of European play are on hold for Wrexham and the other Welsh teams.
