Young Penguins Shine at World Juniors

The IIHF World Junior Championships are underway in Ottawa, bringing together the best under-20 hockey players from around the globe. The Pittsburgh Penguins have three prospects joining the action. Forward Tanner Howe, a second-round pick in 2024, will represent Canada. The Finnish team includes two Penguins defensemen, Kalle Kangas (seventh round, 2023) and Emil Pieniniemi (third round, 2023). Unfortunately, Harrison Brunicke, another 2024 second-round pick, missed out due to a wrist injury but will be eligible next year. Howe’s selection for Team Canada sparked some online debate, as he was chosen over more highly regarded players. However, the World Junior Championships aren't just about picking future stars. They aim to create a balanced team. In a recent exhibition game, Howe impressed with his hard work and ability to draw penalties, showing he can bring much-needed energy to the tournament.

Pieniniemi, just 19, has been named one of Finland's rotating alternate captains. He moved from the Finnish pro league to the Ontario Hockey League and has been a standout defender this season. While there are no Penguins prospects on Team USA, there's a local connection. Brandon Svoboda, from Westmoreland County and a former Pittsburgh Penguin Elite player, made the American Junior Team. Now at Boston University, Svoboda was a third-round pick by the San Jose Sharks in 2023. The Penguins prospects will face off right away, as Canada and Finland play in the opening game. From there, Canada continues their preliminary games against Latvia, Germany, and the USA. Finland faces Germany, the USA, and Latvia. Fans in America can watch the games on the NHL Network.
