Zoe Saldaña: Ready for Her Close-Up in Directing
Tuesday, September 10, 2024
But before tackling her own project, Saldana is making waves with her latest role in Netflix's Emilia Perez. She plays Rita, a Dominican immigrant lawyer struggling against discrimination in Mexico City. Saldana was initially hesitant to take on the part due to concerns over cultural appropriation.'I had to make sure I was representing the character and community authentically,' she explained. 'Colonialism and racism are very real issues within Latin American countries that we don't often discuss openly.'
Through her research, Saldana realized Rita's story of invisibility as a Black woman resonated with her own experiences growing up in Dominican communities. She immersed herself in the role to bring this nuanced perspective to light.
With Emilia Perez set for release this fall and three more Avatar sequels on the horizon, it's clear Zoe Saldaña shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
