Local Sports Legends to be Honored in 2026
The Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame is set to celebrate some remarkable athletes and teams in 2026. This year, they're making history by including a Little League team for the first time ever.
2001 Roosevelt Park Little League Baseball Team
The 2001 Roosevelt Park Little League baseball team is a big deal because they're the only team from the area to win a state championship in the traditional Little League division. They had an amazing run, beating some tough teams like Taylor, Georgetown, and Grosse Pointe. They even made it to the regional tournament in Indianapolis but fell just short of going to the Little League World Series.
Basketball and Wrestling Honorees
The Hall of Fame isn't just about baseball. They're also honoring some big names in basketball and wrestling:
- Drew Naymick: A former standout basketball player from North Muskegon, known for his shot-blocking skills and a long professional career playing overseas.
- Zeerip Family: From Hesperia, recognized for their wrestling success. The family has produced top wrestlers who went on to coach at the college level.
Football and Distinguished Service
- Dave Cooke: A legendary high school football coach who spent 40 years coaching teams in the area and led North Muskegon to the state playoffs multiple times.
- Frank Schubert: A longtime teacher, coach, and official, receiving the Gene Young Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to sports in the area.
Induction Ceremony
The induction ceremony will take place on June 6, 2026, at the Fricano Event Center. The Hall of Fame is known for celebrating the grit, talent, and triumphs of local sports icons. It's a big deal for the community and a chance to honor those who have made a significant impact on sports in the area.
